We wanted to build a business in our community that could positively serve the needs of North Portland residents while      helping to strengthen the local economy,  says James Hayes, one of the owners of Proper Eats.  We believe in the importance of supporting small, independent farmers, distributors, manufacturers and artisans, which are values that we believe are in sync with the St. Johns community spirit.  We also believe in bringing the best quality food to our neighbors at an affordable price that the average family can afford.'

Proper Eats will also be staying open late and serving beer and wine and will have extended hours to create an alternative late night option for those in the community.  The owners of Proper Eats plan to make their market and café a gathering place for the community, hosting events such as seed swaps and other events that promote healthy living, environmental stewardship and community development.  Local artists and musicians will be featured regularly at the café as well.

Proper Eats, a unique market and café, announces the grand opening of their business on May 13th in the historic St. Johns business district.  The concept behind the new market is to bring locally grown, organic products to the greater North Portland community.  The market will feature fresh, local produce, bulk items and a variety of other products.  The café will feature vegetarian and vegan dining options that draw upon a number of cultural influences to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience.  The grand opening will coincide with the celebration of the 44th annual St. Johns Day Parade.
